Sumner opened his own practice in 1997 as a criminal defense attorney, with a special focus on defending clients accused of DUI, Felony DUI, all driving offenses and drug cases.
He is a former state court prosecutor, whose primary case load consisted of prosecuting DUI, Felony DUI, Reckless Homicide and Traffic offenses. He graduated from the USC School of Law in 1992.
Sumner currently represents clients in over 25 courts in Upstate South Carolina, including Greenville, Anderson, Spartanburg, Pickens and Laurens counties; as well as the city/municipal courts of Greenville, Anderson, Spartanburg, Simpsonville, Mauldin, Greer, Fountain Inn, Easley, Clemson, Central, and Laurens.
On February 21, 2013 Attorneys Steve Sumner and Mark Foster of Greenville, SC led a one hour seminar for the benefit of South Carolina DUI/drunk driving defense attorneys. The one hour seminar, "For the DUI Practitioner: A review of significant South Carolina, US Supreme Court and National Decisions" was put together and delivered at the invitation of the South Carolina Bar-Continuing Legal Education Division in Columbia, South Carolina. Attorneys Sumner and Foster reviewed and discussed significant recent court opinions in the field of DUI/drunk driving defense. The seminar includes discussions of recent opinions from the South Carolina Court of Appeals, the South Carolina Supreme Court, the United States Supreme Court and other state supreme courts across the country. The perspective of the seminar is for the DUI/drunk driving defense attorney.
